Hanover is an unincorporated community located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Known for its direct location to some major destinations like the BWI Airport and Arundel Mills, this community also features some great recreational opportunities.

South of Elkridge and East of Columbia

Hanover’s location is roughly belted by Route 1 and the railroad tracks to the west, the Patapsco River to the north, BWI Airport to the east, and Route 713 intersection with Route 175 is the area’s most southern point. The community is bordered by Severn, Fort Meade and Jessup to the south, Linthicum to the east, Baltimore to the northeast, Columbia to the west and Elkridge to the north. Glen Burnie and Patapsco are also a short drive away.

Hanover History

The community also consisted of “Anderson”, a post office stop founded along the B&O tracks from around 1874-1881 along modern Anderson Avenue and operated as “Hanoverville” until 1896. Native American tribes are known to have lived along the Patapsco River. After an archeological dig around the area in 1929, arrowheads, spear points, axes and shell gorgets were found along the Disney farm. The area is now occupied by commercial buildings along Hi Tech Drive and Oxford Square development.

MARC & BWI

The Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is located directly east of the neighborhood. One of three airports servicing the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, this airport also provides direct rail service. Located one mile from the main terminal is the BWI MARC station. This location also provides an Amtrak station and a free shuttle bus that runs between the station and the airport terminal. The other MARC station in the area is south of Elkridge in Dorsey. Major roads in and around Hanover are not limited to Route 1, 100, 295, 103 and I-195—which allows easy access to downtown Baltimore.
